BEING BORN-AGAIN BY THE LOGOS OF GOD!
There are two primary Greek words that describe Scripture which are translated “word” in the New Testament. The first, LOGOS, refers principally to the total inspired Word of God AND TO JESUS, who is the living Word. LOGOS is found in John 1:1; Luke 8:11; Philippians 2:16; Hebrews 4:12; and other verses.
The second Greek word translated “word” is RHEMA, which refers to the SPOKEN word. RHEMA literally means an UTTERANCE (individually, collectively or specifically). Examples are found in Luke 1:38; 3:2; 5:5; and Acts 11:16.
“In the beginning was the LOGOS, and the LOGOS was with God, and the LOGOS was God!” [John 1:1]
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He himself.
And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His Name is called The LOGOS of God!” [Rev 19:11-13]
So when the Bible says that men are ‘born of the Word’ it is NOT THE PREACHER’S SPOKEN WORD which is the RHEMA but the incarnate Word which is the LOGOS!
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the LOGOS of God, which liveth and abideth forever!” [1Peter 1:23]
. . . i.e. THE INCARNATE WORD EVEN CHRIST AND NOT THE SPOKEN WORD (OR RHEMA) OF THE PREACHER!
Same thing in James 1:18 –
“Of His own will begat He us with the LOGOS of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures!”
Get this – “MAN IS PASSIVE IN REGENERATION! He cannot actively originate spiritual life. His relation to regeneration is that of a recipient. This is a part of the meaning of “passivity” in this connection. In that particular instant when the divine and holy life is implanted, the soul of man contributes no energy of efficiency of any kind. Being dead in sin, it cannot produce life to righteousness. A corpse cannot originate animal life. Lazarus was passive at that punctum temporis . . . when his body was reanimated. The same is true of the soul of man in respect to regeneration.
Again man CANNOT cooperate in regeneration. This follows logically from the fact that he is passive in regeneration. A dead man cannot assist in his own resurrection. It also follows from the fact that cooperation implies some agreement between the parties. God and the sinner must harmonize before they can work together. Two forces cannot cooperate unless they are coordinate and coincident forces. But up to the instant of regeneration, man is hostile to God: “The carnal mind is enmity toward God” (Rom. 8:7). Enmity cannot cooperate with love.” – William G. T. Shedd
“Now if you will tell us how much rain and dew it takes to give life to a dead plant, we will tell you how much gospel it will take to quicken a dead sinner. If you believe in gospel preaching for regeneration, the task will be easy; but remember, the life is not in the preaching of the gospel, but in the child of grace who is fed and strengthened by the gospel. The dear Savior declared what has already been done for us. We experience it at His appointed time.
Naturally, a person must be in possession of a mind before he is capable of being taught; so one must be in possession of a spiritual mind before he can be taught spiritual things. We must receive the Spirit, which is of God, to enable us to know the things of God. The life or germ does not come into the earth through the rain; so the eternal life does not come to the sinner by the preaching of the gospel. The living seed must be in the earth before the rain can assist in the growth of the plant; so the Spirit of God or eternal life must be in the poor sinner before the gospel preaching can teach him spiritual things.
The gospel message is as essential to a Christian’s growth as rain is to the vegetable growth.
PREACHING IS NOT TO QUICKEN A DEAD SINNER, BUT TO FEED AND SUSTAIN ONE WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN QUICKENED!” [Hattie Berry]
