I ONCE WAS LOST!
by Gary Shepard
In Newton’s old hymn, Amazing Grace, he wrote this line: “I once was lost but now am found.” Can we sing this in truth, saying, “I once was LOST”? Lost is the condition of all God saves. Lost, that is, in such a condition as to not be able to know God, save ourselves or find the way to God, to please God or come to Him. Are there few that be saved in our day? Maybe it is because nobody’s lost. Nobody sees themselves in this desperate condition – LOST.
But as a dear brother once said, “If you’ve never been lost, then you’ve never been saved!”
This is who Christ came to save and this is who He saved. Lost means helpless, hopeless, and unable to save ourselves. Lost in sin. God’s people are described as “LOST SHEEP” and in need of the Shepherd’s seeking and saving. Those who are truly “lost” must BE found. When they are found by the seeking Shepherd, they attribute all of their salvation to Him and say as Newton, “I once was lost but now AM FOUND!” They know and confess that they were lost and had to be found by Another, the Lord Jesus Christ who came to seek and save that which was lost.
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). These are the lost sheep of the house of God’s true and spiritual Israel. These are lost because of their straying from God which began in Adam and continues until the great Shepherd of the sheep finds them! “What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost” (Luke 15:4-6).
Truly, Jesus the Shepherd Savior shall save all His people from their sins. And when they are found, they know they were lost and that it was Christ that saved them and not themselves in any way. These lost sheep are among every “kindred, tribe, nation and tongue” but the Shepherd will find them and of all the Father has given Him, He shall lose NONE.
Some will be found lost in outward wickedness and immorality and some will be found among the false religions of this world and many in various degrees and states in between these two. But make no mistake, all Christ saves are in all these different states, LOST!
Have YOU been “FOUND?”
