Please don’t get me wrong, brethren, I still am a lover of the old fashioned real ‘paper back and hard bound books’ and Bibles. And I haven’t yet sold my massive library in a ‘garage sale’. But the fact remains that I find my Tablet more useful and practical in my study of God’s Word.

There are many reasons for this. I will just state two most important ones. As a servant of God who travels most of the time and enjoys sharing what I have read, ‘word for word’ it would be practically impossible for me to walk around with four trunk loads of Theology and Reference books. But now I have practically ALL these books on my Galaxy Tablet which is a little smaller than the ‘slate chalkboard’ which I held in my kindergarten! The complete works of A.W. Pink, J.C. Philpot, Owen, Dr. Gill, Edwards, Spurgeon and a whole lot of others ALL loaded on my tablet and Smartphone ready to be accessed at any time!

The second greatest advantage of a Tablet or for that matter any sophisticated smart-phone is the ‘SEARCH ENGINE’. I always like to quote things verbatim (word for word). And my paperback Crudens’ Concordance has now broken into three pieces due to extensive usage over the last twenty three years. And the print is SO SMALL that it is truly a strain on my eyes to search for a given scripture. But not so with my Tablet. I can search out any phrase or word in a ‘jiffy’ and cut and paste the same in the letter which I am writing to a sheep! Now THAT is a tremendous blessing!

And not only can I search out the verse or find and quote something which some theologian has spoken, but I can also highlight it, underline it or write notes beside it as per my desire.

And when I am too tired to ‘read’ I can just turn on an audio sermon or Alexander Scourby’s audio KJV Bible which I have loaded, or when there is an Internet wifi connection I can log in to ‘sermon audio’ or any one of the other myriads of Reformed Christian websites and ‘LISTEN’ to audio sermons, irrespective of whether I am laying down on my bed or traveling on a train. Even a ‘Laptop’ is a little cumbersome compared to these latest tablets.

All that to say, a tablet or a smart-phone is a good investment for a Christian, especially a Christian worker. And no, you don’t have to be a ‘Rocket scientist’ to learn how to use one. I just taught my 65 year old mom how to use one and if she can get it so can you!

  1. Dear brother Mike, Can you teach a 83 year old lady with numerous health issues to use one? I do have a little Samsung, a very old one, which is so terribly slow and I can do little on it. The print also is a problem. It was bought secondhand to see if I could even manage to use one, but I am very limited on it, sure that there are so many uses I just do not know.
My daughter is hopefully coming for a short visit late May and she had already mentioned about me having a later edition. What would you advise please?

    Love in Christ, English Rose

    • Sure I can teach anyone who is willing to learn dear Sister. Some learn a little faster while others are a little slow, but nothing is impossible for the one who is dependent on the Lord and is determined to learn.

When it comes to tablets in my own personal opinion there is nothing better and more reliable than Apple’s iPad. I have personally used the iPad for the last twelve years and have found it to be the best amongst tablets.

And unlike the limitations of the size of the font on a smartphone, a tablet is more practical for those who prefer really large print.

When it comes to smartphones you have basically three major platforms to choose from –the Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android phones and lastly Microsoft’s Windows phones. Of these three again Apple is very user-friendly and easier to learn for the novice while Android phones take a little more effort to learn. I shall not speak of Windows smartphones here because though their hardware (meaning the build quality of the phone) itself is top-notch, their software and the applications available with them have much to be desired. So you have to choose between an Apple iPhone and the myriads of Android phones available out there.

So please write and let me know WHICH of these you prefer. With an Apple iPhone everything is pretty much straight forward. Once your daughter Gill sets it up for you and shows you how to use it then there’s nothing more to it than just using it regularly and charging it when needed. While Apple iPhones are priced exorbitantly you can always find a used one for sale on eBay or even buy a refurbished iPhone at the Apple Store itself. These will cost way cheaper than a brand new phone and will work as good as a brand new phone!

If you decide to go the Android way then in my opinion Samsung phones are both reasonably priced and also serve you well. And since you prefer large fonts to read without straining your eyes then you should go for a phone which is 5.5 inches and above. Among these you could go for the Samsung Galaxy J7, A9 Pro or the C9 Pro. The Galaxy J7 is pretty much a basic model and comes quite cheap compared to the A9 Pro and the C9 Pro. The battery life on these phones are also exceptional and will serve you for more than a day and a half even on extensive usage.

So there you go. That is a basic introduction for choosing the right phone. And all of the above mentioned Tablets and phones are ones I have personally used for a while and so can with confidence suggest them to someone else. If you have any further questions please feel free to write and ask me at my email.
Love to both Brother George and you.
