Michael Jeshurun

The ‘god’ of the average nominal ‘Christian’ is not the Sovereign King of the universe who “hath mercy on whom He will and hardens who He will”! [Rom 9:18] He is a weak impotent ‘god’ who is at the mercy of the supposed mighty ‘free-will’ of man!

There is a familiar painting which depicts the Lord Jesus standing at a door and knocking. Much ado is made of the fact that this ‘door’ has no handle or knob on the outside . . . implying that it is inside!

I have heard more than one Arminian preacher use this painting as an illustration to plead with sinners to ‘get saved’! “Have you noticed” says the untaught evangelist, “that the artist has deliberately omitted painting a handle to the door. And why is this? Because, my friends, this is the door of the human heart. And the handle to this door is only on the inside, and it is YOU who must open this door and let Jesus into your heart” blah blah!

Granted, that the door on which Jesus is knocking is the door of the human heart, the Bible leaves us with no doubts as to WHICH SIDE of the door the handle is placed and WHO it is that opens that door.

Speaking of Lydia the seller of purple who responded to Paul’s preaching and was saved, it is written, “THE LORD OPENED her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul” [Acts 16:14].

And incidentally when the Lord of glory decides to enter through any ‘door’, He needs no handle or knob to open it! He is the Mighty God who “breaks in pieces the gates of brass, and cuts in sunder the bars of iron”! [Isa 45:2]. He is the Great Jehovah who that hath the ‘key of David’, Who openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth”! [Rev 3:7]

As said the Psalmist –
“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD STRONG AND MIGHTY, the LORD mighty in battle”! [Psalm 24:7,8]

And for those who are new to the faith, please understand that even if the illustration of the painting above was true and it was indeed the Lord who stood there ‘knocking and pleading’ to be let in . . . He would have to stand there and ‘knock’ away for all eternity!

Do you know why?

Unless God sovereignly ‘opens’ his spiritual ears, man can neither hear not receive the things of the spirit!

God has His chosen FEW whom He calls His Elect, His Sheep, His Little ones, His Little flock etc . . . and these and THESE ALONE are GIVEN ears to hear and an heart to understand (Matt 13:11) and are ‘MADE WILLING’ in the Day of His power! [Psalm 110:3]

THIS is the God we believe and serve! THIS is the God who hath saved us! And to THIS SOVEREIGN GOD shall be ALL THE GLORY AND PRAISE!

“The “god” of this twentieth century no more resembles the Supreme Sovereign of Holy Writ than does the dim flickering of a candle the glory of the midday sun!

The “god” who is now talked about in the average pulpit, spoken of in the ordinary Sunday School, mentioned in much of the religious literature of the day, and preached in most of the so-called Bible Conferences is the figment of human imagination, an invention of maudlin sentimentality.

The heathen outside of the pale of Christendom form “gods” out of wood and stone, while the millions of heathen inside Christendom manufacture a “god” out of their own carnal mind. In reality, they are but atheists, for there is no other possible alternative between an absolutely supreme God, and no God at all. A “god” whose will is resisted, whose designs are frustrated, whose purpose is checkmated, possesses no title to Deity, and so far from being a fit object of worship, merits nought but contempt” [A.W. Pink]

The words in Rev 3:20 are the words of our Lord, addressed not to unbelievers but to believers in the Church of Laodicea. To quote this verse in an appeal to ‘win the lost’ for Christ betrays not only our ignorance but our blindness
