THE ROCK THAT BREAKS OR GRINDS TO POWDER

THE ROCK THAT BREAKS OR GRINDS TO POWDER

The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone: Jesus quoted this from Psalm 118 to remind those religious Pharisees that their rejection of Him said more about THEIR guilt and coming judgment than it said about Jesus Himself. Though THEY rejected Him, He is still THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE, fulfilling the great Messianic Psalm 118.

Like a painting from a great master, JESUS is not the one who is on trial – those who hear His Gospel are! These leaders who rejected Jesus had to hear the eventual consequences of their rejection.

Clearly, Jesus claimed to be the rejected stone of Psalm 118:22-24 that God appointed to become the Chief Cornerstone. He is also the Stone of Isaiah 8:13-15 that people stumble over, the Foundation Stone and precious cornerstone of Isaiah 28:16, and the Stone cut out without hands of Daniel 2:34, 44-45 that destroys the world in rebellion to God.

Speaking of rocks, the first thing that impresses us when we see a huge rock is its strength and stability, a characteristic noted in Scripture in the question of Bildad to Job, “Shall the rock be removed out of his place. etc?” (Job. 18:4). Now THIS is a most comforting thought to the believer. The Rock upon which he is built CANNOT be shaken: the floods may come, and the winds may beat upon it, but it will “stand” (Matthew 7:25).

Another prominent characteristic of rocks is their durability. They outlast the storms of time. Waters will not wash them away, nor do winds remove them, from their foundations. Many a vessel has been dashed to pieces on a rock, but the rock stands unchanged; and it is a deeply solemn thought that those who are not built upon The Rock, will be ultimately shattered by it — “And whosoever shall fall on this Stone shall be broken,” said Christ, pointing to Himself, “but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder!” (Matthew 21:24)

Have you truly fallen on the Rock Jesus Christ and been broken or are you amongst those on whom the same Rock will one day fall and grind to powder?!!!
