Do you have a ‘Testimony’ of what Jesus has done for you?

Do you have a ‘Testimony’ of what Jesus has done for you?

Michael Jeshurun

Can you say with David, “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what He hath done for my soul”! [Psalm 66:16].

Have YOU got a story to tell of what Christ has done for YOU or what he means to YOU? You would if you are TRULY REGENERATED! Remember the disciples never asked the Lord, “Lord, teach us to witness” but rather “Lord, teach us to pray”!

Because witnessing or telling others what Jesus has done for you should come naturally . . . if He has done anything for you at all! If the Master has touched you, you CANNOT remain silent about it!

Remember how the Samaritan woman reacted after her encounter with the Lord? Scripture records – ‘The woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ”? [John 4:28]

In fact IF the Master has truly done something for you, the urge to ‘tell it abroad’ or ‘preach it’ will be so strong that you CANNOT be quieted down or shut up! One leper whom the Lord healed could not keep his mouth shut, though the Lord told him to be quiet about it!

“And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed. And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away; And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to BLAZE ABROAD THE MATTER, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter”. [Mark 1:40-45]

The point is not whether the leper obeyed or disobeyed the Lord, but those who have been touched by the Lord just cannot keep it to themselves! As the Master Himself testified, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill CANNOT BE HID”! [Matt 5:14]

And unlike the leper whom the Lord commanded not to tell any man about his healing, He has now (after His resurrection) commanded His disciples to “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature”! He has also warned those who claim to be His followers that if THEY are ashamed of Him, HE shall be ashamed of THEM on that Great Day of Judgment! [Mark 8:38]

Yes the Lord has not called all His followers to go and preach on the streets or door to door; neither has He called everyone to be preachers in the Pulpit!

BUT, wherever God has placed you, whether in a palace or a prison, whether on ‘Wall-street’ or the ghettos (slums), whether you are a young teenager or an old grandmother; if Christ has touched you, then you cannot but help tell others about it in your circle! The disciples said, “we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard”! [Acts 4:20]

“Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I WILL DECLARE WHAT HE HATH DONE FOR MY SOUL”! [Psalm 66:16].

Has He done ANYTHING for YOUR soul?

If you are a truly saved Christian, then God has done MUCH to redeem your soul, pardon your guilt, give you peace and joy, enabled you to overcome sin, given you comfort in the prospect of death, and given you a hope of heaven to come! And if you have experienced any of this, then you will talk about it!

Nobody needs to coerce you, threaten you or even remind you! It will spontaneously come out of your mouth! “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh”! [Matt 12:34]

“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy”!

Have you been redeemed?

Redeemed—how I LOVE TO PROCLAIM IT!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am.

I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the daylong;
I sing, for I CANNOT BE SILENT;
His love is the theme of my song.   [Fanny Crosby]

“He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD”! [Psalm 40:2,3]

Letter to a Sister on ‘Street-Preaching’!

Letter to a Sister on ‘Street-Preaching’

Dear Sister Sarah,

I was so glad to hear that you pass out tracts on weekend and preach to folks on the streets. I am really proud of you, Sarah. I pray that the Lord will bless you with a great utterance and use you more and more!

Let me share a little bit about MY preaching history. The first twelve years of my ‘born-again’ life I was very actively engaged in street-preaching. When I say actively engaged, I mean morning and evening I used to go out on the streets to share the gospel. The Lord taught me a lot through this and I feel led to share a few tips that might be of help to you.

The Seriousness of it!

Every Christian is on the Devil’s hit list, but more so the street-preacher! If you will, the ‘evangelist’ is on the top of the Devil’s list as a priority, for he/she occupies the front line of the Lord’s Army. The Devil fears that he is now going to lose his subjects through YOUR preaching. Trust me, when you decide to start actively preaching the Gospel and reaching the lost, all Hell breaks loose! As the Apostle said – “a GREAT DOOR and effectual (for the gospel) is opened unto me, and there are MANY adversaries”. [1Cor 16:9]

Our insufficiency concerning it!

“And who is sufficient for these things”? [2Cor 3:16]. The apostle said this in reference to his preaching ministry. Who is sufficient? Surely, none! So we see all through scripture that the men whom God singled out to be His spokesman made every imaginable excuse possible to get out of it. Moses said – “O my LORD, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since Thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue”. [Ex 4;10]. Jeremiah said – “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child”. [Jer 1:6]

But this ought not to deter you, Sarah. For if God has called you to go out and preach, then He will enable you to the task at hand. The apostle said – “Not that WE are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our SUFFICIENCY IS OF GOD; who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament”. [2Cor 3:5,6]. Please bear in mind that when you stand on the street or any other place officially proclaiming the Gospel, ‘it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you’! [Mat 10:20]. So take no thought HOW or WHAT ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak”. [Mat 10:19].

The Method or Strategy!

The simplest and by far the most common way is to stand on the street-corner and hand out ‘Gospel-Tracts’. In fact the majority of street-preachers employ this method. And God bless those who do this. But surely it is not the most efficient way to reach people. (Sarah, I do not say this to offend you, but like I said earlier I am really proud of you, and so is the Lord) But consider the fact that ‘Tract distribution’ is of considerably recent origin. The early Church and the early Christians never employed this strategy though there were writing tools available in their day. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT GOD DOES NOT OR CANNOT USE GOSPEL TRACTS, but to be most efficient in this work, there is no substitute for ‘one on one’ witnessing! There is just something about looking a child of God in the eye and hearing the Spirit speak through her, which no ‘Gospel-tract’ (as eloquent and convincing it may be) can substitute!

So here’s how the Lord trained ME to do it: I would stand by the side of the road and watch people as they go by. Then of all the people coming down the road there would be one whom the Lord’s Spirit would nudge me to approach. [We must always bear in mind that the Lord is not trying to reach everyone with His Gospel, for many (not all) are called but few chosen).

So when the Spirit gave me a ‘check’ on someone I would walk up that person (no matter how menacing he or she may look) and say – “You got a minute to spare, I’ve got something very important to tell you”. The answer will usually be a “Yes” or “No”. Trust me Sarah, when you are out there preaching, there is a special anointing on you, like with Stephen (see Act 6:15), and men usually know what you are trying to ‘push’! The majority don’t want anything to do with it. They don’t even want to hear about it. But always encourage yourself with the fact that he that receiveth not you, receiveth not Him that sent you!

There are a few who will stop to hear what you have to say. When someone stopped and said “All right, what is it you want to say”; I’d take them to the side of the road so we could speak more comfortably without obstructing the other passersby.

Here is how I would go about it after introducing myself –

“Do you believe in a life after death”?  (You’ll be amazed that the majority DO)

Next question – “Do you believe that there is a Heaven and a Hell”?

If the answer is yes, then the next question is – “If you happened to die today where do you think you would go”?

No matter what the answer to the above question is, you can use it as a platform to preach Christ unto him. But first do make sure that you try and convince them that they are sinners before God. Yes, only the Holy Spirit can convince, but we have to tell people the truth about sin!

There is no need to say that Jesus loves YOU and died for YOU, for WE really don’t know if he is a sheep or a goat. You can say that Christ loved sinners and died for them and rose again! Then ask him the million dollar question – “Do you believe this”?!

If Christ has represented him at the Cross then this word WILL MEAN something to him, if not it will either be utter foolishness or a stumbling block. “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are CALLED, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God”. [1Cor 1:23,24]

“No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost”. [1Cor 12:3] Remember, if you can argue and convince someone into confessing Christ, then a better orator than you can talk him out of it. The convincing part is COMPLETELY the Holy Spirit’s work. The Master said concerning the Holy Spirit – “when He is come, HE will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” [John 16:8].

Our job is to deliver the message faithfully. The outcome is completely out of our hands, and we have neither lot nor say in the matter.

A few general points before I close:

The Lord said that His Word would not return unto Him void, but will accomplish that which He pleases and prosper in the thing whereto He sent it! [Isa 55:11]. So when you are preaching to someone, the Word is going out from you either as a savour of ‘life unto life’ (election) or ‘death unto death’ (reprobation). [see 2Cor 2:14-17]. So either way you are a winner as long as you faithfully preach. The Lord never said, “Well done thou SUCCESSFUL servant”, but “well done thou good and FAITHFUL servant”! [Mat 25:21]

Even if the one you are witnessing to agrees with what you have said, do not get him to say the ‘sinner’s prayer’ to invite Jesus into his heart. (the sinner’s prayer saves no one) If they agree with you and say they do believe. Then ask them when you can see them again. Try and get their number and follow up.

Here’s something off the record, Sarah. There will be those who will agree with you and sometimes even seem to sincerely pose questions about God and the Bible, just to kill time with a beautiful looking girl. Be very discerning. Under no circumstance agree to ‘follow-up’ on any probable ‘sheep’ (especially men) unless you have some other Brother who is strong in the Lord accompanying you! Jesus did not send them out two by two for nothing. [see Mark 6:7]

If someone does not agree with you or wants to argue. Do not try and ‘convince’ them. Remember, sheep do not argue. So put a Gospel tract in their hand and send them away with a smile. One of the cardinal rules of Street-Preaching is to ‘Avoid the Devoid’!

Oh there is so much more I want to share with you on this subject, but I do not want to weary you. I shall write again. You will be specially remembered in my prayers. I shall pray that utterance may be given unto you, that you may open your mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel! [Eph 6:19].

The Lord’s word to Paul, is the same to you – “Be not afraid, but SPEAK, and hold not thy peace:  For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have MUCH PEOPLE in this city”. [Act 18:9,10].

And again to Jeremiah – “Be not afraid of their FACES: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD”! [Jer 1:6] Hallelujah!

Love

Mike!
